I've seen a couple of these "Physicians Radio Network" receivers on eBay. But what are they?

Interesting idea of having a private radio station doctors could listen to for medical news. The unique receiver was the downfall I guess.

If I were them I would have just rolled the system over to an Internet based stream. Could do audio and/or video. Doctors would only need Internet access and a password to listen. They could also track how many were actually utilizing the system. Programing would be a lot easier and they could offer streams and a library of past broadcasts by subject. My guess is someone beat them to the punch.

XM / Sirius have a couple of 24/7 "doctor" channels... There are numerous websites that offer medical conferences, updates, medical news, etc... - some free and some for subscribers only. Many are sponsored by speciality groups and societies....

I'm guessing here, but - - - - judging from the styling, it may pre-date most or all of the Internet.

Yup, that last NYT article was published May 21, 1981. I had just finished building my first home computer. Guess it was a little early for streaming audio.

Based on the link that Steve posted above, and based on the seller's representation that she can receive signals, I think this is an FM receiver. But it only receives a certain portion of the FM band, 67 kHz to 92 kHz. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Subsidiary_communications_authority.
