Pleased that that has sorted itself out; The suspicion was that the power supply was the culprit. Which is why there was little comment on looking elswhere until it had been proven and why we were so pedantic on concentrating on it.

That set does really need some filter caps with attitude (big volts). Unfortunately filament rectifiers by nature tend to cause large surges prior to the heater tubes coming into conduction. Anything marginal is liable to be "taken out".
