http://cgi.ebay.ca/NEW-89-TUBE-HK-89-BA-VACUUM-TUBE-HK89-TUBE-BOX-9-/170067715909?pt=Vintage_Electronics_R2&hash=item2798d36745

Having a browse about eBay and: I think this is a rectifier, but it definitely is not a VT89. Anyone know?

It looks like a High Voltage Rectifier. But if it is an 89, look at this:

Yes, the Type 89/VT89 is a 6 pin tube with top cap.

Rectifiers have bell anodes and base shielded cathodes.

This tube is also 4 pins unless two of the pins are hiding in the photo of it :O

I also tried to find an RK-89 thinking it was maybe related numerically to the Raytheon tube but no luck there either :/

Also, I only see two elements extending into the "plate". Filament? If it is a triode or gammatron I don't see it. My guess is a rectifier.

From the shape and the arrangement of electrodes, seems a old HV half wave rectifier.

Just noticed that.
But why would a TV rectifier have 4 pins affraid

Leave it to Smeeze lol!
That tube is older than you Id guess.

CXC may be the makers initials but HK is also used by Heintz and Kaufman. So what we have is a mystery untill one of the TCA gurus answers up.

The HK89 looks like a Kenotron , that one a high voltage rectifier. The Kenotrons in the big GE binder here have plates like that and 4 pin bases. Some old scopes had 2X2s with that base.

Kinda does look like a 2X2. Have one around here somewhere.

I use a pair of 2X2A's in my Big Bertha scope.

This rectifier looks to be a few degrees tougher than a 2X2, but is otherwise much like it.

2X2s were used with transformer power packs, unlike 1B3s, and when touched, the plate gave you a finger-burning wallop not just a cussword zap.

There was a 2X2 in a big capacitor supply that flashed over and burned out a whole slew of lightbulbs in an old house with knob and tube wiring. So much for the ground.

Cool Thank you for all the answers.

Well, this one intrigued me enough I clicked the "buy it" button. If nothing else, it will be a conversation piece in time to come.
